Why Night is the Most Dangerous Time to Drive

Driving is an everyday necessity for most of us, but it also poses a vast amount of risks to our safety, particularly at night. While accidents can happen at any time of day, nighttime driving is inherently more dangerous due to the lack of light, among other reasons. In fact, according to the National Safety Council (NSC), the risk of a fatal crash is three times greater at night.

Since it is not practical for everyone to simply not drive at night, here are some reasons why you should at least exercise extra caution if you are spending an evening out on the roadways:

  • Darkness: In the dark, your depth of perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision are all compromised. Even the glare of another vehicle’s headlights can temporarily blind you, resulting in a disastrous accident. To make the drive a little less perilous, you should always make sure your headlights are clean and aimed correctly, dim your dashboard, keep your windshield clean to eliminate streaks, look away from oncoming lights, and reduce your speed to compensate for limited visibility.
  • Poor night vision: For many of us, seeing in the dark is difficult and we often miss things we would otherwise be able to be aware of in the daytime, particularly if you are over the age of 50. The American Optometric Association recommends that older drivers have annual eye exams, reduce their speed at night, minimize all distractions, and limit driving to daytime hours if possible.
  • Fatigue: According to a poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, 60% of adults have driven while tired while another 37% admitted to falling asleep at the wheel. Drowsy driving is comparable to the impairment one experiences after having had a few beers, so you should always make sure you get about seven or more hours of sleep a night and never drive if you have been awake for more than 24 hours. If you are in for a long evening drive, pull over to a rest stop to take a nap, or try to only travel during times when you are usually awake.
